How is genetic testing different than genomic testing?

The words Genetic and Genomic are often used interchangeably. In terms of cancer testing, they each have a specific meaning. Genetic testing identifies variants (mutations or changes) in a person’s genes that they inherited (were born with). Inherited (hereditary) gene variants are often referred to as germline variants. Genomic testing identifies gene variants isolated to a tumor. Gene variants that occur in a tumor are referred to as somatic variants. Gene variants in a tumor often suggest how that cancer developed and whether a specific treatment might be effective.


How can the GEM Cancer Panel™ help my treatment?

The GEM Cancer Panel™ matches gene variants found in your tumor with FDA-approved therapies that are known to act on those genes. This gives your physician treatment options that will specifically target the cancer and not the surrounding normal tissue. The report also provides your physician with potential clinical trials that you may be eligible for based on the variants found in your tumor.


How likely is it that the GEM Cancer Panel™ will uncover treatment or clinical trial options for my cancer?

In approximately 90% of our cases, testing reveals variants with either FDA approved drug matches, clinical trial options, or both.


Why do you need both a tissue and blood sample?

The GEM Cancer Panel™ compares the DNA from your tumor to the DNA in your blood (normal) in order to subtract out (exclude) hereditary variations, leaving only the variants identified in your tumor. This leaves us with the most specific genomic picture of your tumor.


Will my physician receive any information on my hereditary alterations found in my blood sample?

No hereditary information will be reported back to your physician. The GEM Cancer Panel™ is intended to address tumor-specific variants. However, in some cases, hereditary variants can play a role in your cancer and can be targets for therapy. The GEM Cancer Panel™ retains those select variants for reporting to your oncologist.


How long does it take for my physician to get the results of my GEM Cancer Panel™?

Turnaround time for the GEM Cancer Panel™ is 10-14 days.

Will my insurance cover the cost of the GEM Cancer Panel™?

Ashion recognizes that the cost for cancer-related care can be quite significant. Ashion strives to ensure that financial issues do not prevent patients from seeking or receiving medically necessary care. The cost of the GEM Cancer Panel is often covered through insurance. If the test is not covered by your insurance, or if you are un-insured/underinsured, please contact customer support at 1-844-539-3309 for payment options. Payer Policy
Commercial Insurance Ashion requires a signed Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) for commercial payers in order to bill insurance for these tests. Ashion will then courtesy bill the insurance. Please be sure to send us complete insurance information, and include a copy of the front and back of the insurance card. A patient will be responsible for all fees not covered by insurance.
Self-Pay Ashion requires a signed Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) for self-pay patients. Payment by check, credit card, or wire transfer is required at the time of sample submission. If patient is paying by money order or check. 100% of the fee is due at the time of sample submission for all self-pay patients.
International Bill Samples from outside the United States must be accompanied by full payment at the time of sample submission. This can be accomplished by wire transfer, check, or credit card. Medicare / Medicaid / TriCare Ashion is currently not a Medicare, Medicaid, TriCare or other government funded replacement plan provider, and therefore not able to accept those programs for payment.
Institutional Billing Ashion can bill a referring institution directly if an Institutional Account with Ashion has been established. Patient Responsibility
Patients are financially responsible for any deductibles, co-payments, and/or co-insurance deemed the patient’s responsibility in accordance with federal and state regulations and the patient’s individual insurance plan. As a condition of your testing by Ashion, financial responsibility must be determined in advance. Individuals with the financial means to pay for Ashion services are expected to do so in accordance with state and federal law.

 

Billing Compliance and Privacy
All patient information is used by Ashion in a legal and HIPAA compliant manner. We do not release test results to outside institutions, unless you specifically authorize it.
